Have you married your father?

CG was preparing his bestman’s speech for a close friend’s wedding dinner. So he went online to search for quotes/jokes etc. There was this quote that both of us liked, “Happy marriages begin when we marry the ones we love, and they blossom when we love the ones we marry.“

Coincidentally, I came across the article in a magazine that read, “Have you married your father?” According to the author, whether they are conscious of it or not, many women end up marrying a man who reminds them of daddy : for better or worse.

Some excerpts from the article :

“When seeking a spouse, a woman may not be conscious of wanting to marry someone like her father, but she often ends up with a man who closely resembles him…”

“There is a strong urge in many women to see themselves as a rescuer.  They want to save him from the same fate as their father, something they were powerless to do as a child…   Similarly the daughters of fathers who rarely showed affection are often attracted to an uncompromisingly masculine man, also in the hope of reforming him…”

“But if a woman feels anger at her father’s behaviour, she may deliberately seek a husband who is quite different to him…”

“Women’s attachments, or lack of them, are mirror images of how they related to their fathers…  People often instinctively repeat what they experienced in childhood, even if it was the wrost thing in the world.  It’s what they know.  They are trying to have one more shot at childhood.”

There were several celebrity couples mentioned in the article (Hee Hee, I think you know which magazine this is…  =P)  And the couples all seemed to prove the author’s point.  Celebrities like Sophia Loren, Celine Dion, all seemed to have married men like their fathers.

This is not the first time I came across an article with this viewpoint.  I once read elsewhere that while ladies marry men like their fathers, men marry women like their mothers.  When I asked my male friends, some strongly protested.  Some said they only need 1 mother.  =P  But when I asked my female friends, many thought for a while and agreed that their boyfriends/husbands do have strong resemblances to their fathers.  Perhaps what the author said is true.  It really depends on the type of relationship you shared with your father/mother.

But there is something that I don’t really agree with.  I don’t think women are trying to reform their husbands.  I suppose they should know it’s a tall order.  =P

What about you?  What do you think?  =)
